Musings Of A 30 Something Dad And Technology Nut

This article by Stacey Higginbotham is at least 1,500 words too many. Only three words are really needed:

They’re greedy bastards.

But perhaps that’s even too many words since the above statement is implied by the fact that Verizon is a U.S. carrier.

It’s been hard on them. They can’t support the crazy growth. Whine whine whine. They’re making more money than ever. As Higginbotham rightly notes, it’s all about demand. They’re doing it because people will pay. They’re doing it because they’re greedy bastards.

While the announcement from Facebook today was cool, I really don’t have any use for it. What I want to know is where is the Facebook iPad app? Rumor is that they are working on one, and I was really hoping it would be announced today. I’ve tried all the ones on the iPad right now and they all leave something to be desired.

Hopefully we will hear more about this soon. It’s a real missed opportunity for Facebook.

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.

I always had a hard time believing Apple/Jobs would sign off on iSteve: The Book of Jobs. It was a weird mixture of being both a little too cute and a little too weighty.

Turns out, Isaacson didn’t like it either. Not surprisingly, the publisher’s publicity department picked it originally. As Philip Elmer-Dewitt reports:

The old one, iSteve: The Book of Jobs, was chosen by Simon & Schuster’s publicity department. The author, Walter Isaacson, was never quite sure about it. His wife and daughter, however, were. They thought it was too cutesy. And now Isaacson has persuaded his publisher to go with something simpler and more elegant.

Smart Phones—The New TVs

Today was the big day of the Casey Anthony verdict. And lots of people all over the country were riveted to find out what the verdict would be. Interestingly, I watched the verdict on my wife’s iPhone. It was actually pretty interesting because not only was I watching it, but also my mom, dad, and brother. So there we all were on the back porch watching this event live on a cell phone rather than on a television screen. I couldn’t help but find this amusing. Back when the OJ trial verdict was being handed down, people were glued to their TVs to watch the event. With Casey Anthony, this was still the case of course. But I’m sure that there were tons of people that watched this event live on their cell phones just like we did. Sometimes I wonder where we will be technology-wise in ten more years.

By 2015, students will be carrying digital textbooks in lieu of paperback books in all schools in South Korea, according to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Pretty hilarious. And potentially embarrassing.
Transformers

I haven’t watched the new Transformers movie yet. But reading the reviews and such, it sure seems like it’s more of the same. I wonder if it would ever be possible to get a truly great Transformers movie. One with all the spectacle you expect, but with a decent story as well. Maybe eventually Hollywood will decide to reboot the franchise with a different director at the helm. There is plenty of mythology to work with. Somewhere in there is a really great movie.
